Shane Plummer, president of
Buffalo Ranch, enjoyed the ride of his life
on May 10 as he and one of his ranch’s
showcase stallions, Laredo Blue, won the $50,000
Amateur title with a 222 to earn $4,043.
Plummer has earned much bigger
checks as a cutter, but he said picking up
his first championship in four trips to the
Western Nationals, which take place within
a 20-minute drive of his family’s cutting
horse training and breeding facility, was
a pretty big deal to him. Winning with a career-best
score aboard Laredo Blue, an 8-year-old stallion
by Mecom Blue out of Rosita Wilson by Doc
Wilson, made the moment even more special.
“He’s very gritty.
He knows that he can beat that cow,’’
Plummer said following a spectacular run in
which the horse simply dominated three cows.
“He just has so much confidence in what
he’s doing. You just feel it underneath
you and it builds confidence. That’s
what’s fun about this horse.”
Laredo
Blue is closing in on $300,000 in career earnings,
with about $292,000 earned prior to the show,
Plummer said, adding the horse will not compete
again after he passes that mark. Plummer also
competed on Laredo Blue in the Non-Pro finals
on May 11.
